Jeffers’s book is an ambitious work set with the fine china of the oeuvre of Du Bois, a man whose life and work pulsated with questions about the inheritance of Black American history and what one does with that fraught and complex legacy. His writing, his ambitions, his failings and his accomplishments are the bass line of Honorée Fanonne Jeffers’s sweeping, masterly debut novel, “The Love Songs of W.E.B. He is, many would argue, the founding father of modern Black America. Great Barrington was the birthplace of Du Bois, and as I learned when I was named a Du Bois scholar, the great man was so many things: an elder statesman of African American life, a distinguished historian, a sociologist, a civil-rights leader and an early model of what it might mean to be a public intellectual. At 16, I moved to Great Barrington, Mass., to attend Bard College at Simon’s Rock. Du Bois has been a part of my intellectual life for as long as I can remember. A minimal number of features include Meek Mill, Young Thug, and Travis Scott on the unconventionally constructed yet uniquely catchy album standout "Hats Off.THE LOVE SONGS OF W.E.B. Still, The Voice of the Heroes is carried primarily by Durk and Baby's chemistry as they adapt to each other without either of them watering down their individualistic styles. The nearly hour-long running time drags somewhat, and some songs could have been left off the final cut. There's a crackling excitement throughout the album, coming through in both the slippery, fast-changing flows of "2040" and the pained storytelling of "Make It Out." Production varies from track to track, with dark and overwhelming drill tracks sitting next to gentler, more emotionally reaching tracks like "Rich Off Pain," which features a moving sung hook from Rod Wave. The 18-track project finds both rappers operating at the top of their games as they play off of each other's energy.

Both drill pioneer Lil Durk and Atlanta-based Young Thug protege Lil Baby came off of chart-topping 2020 albums of their own before joining forces on collaborative effort The Voice of the Heroes.
